For thousands of years, flowers have supplied the colors behind textiles, food, cosmetics, and art across the world. Long before synthetic pigments appeared, communities cultivated specific blooms for their dyeing power. Today, a growing natural-dye movement is bringing many of those traditions back into fashion.
A Global Palette
South Asia holds one of the richest flower-dye heritages. In India, marigolds yield yellow and orange shades for cotton and silk saris, especially in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The palash tree, known as the “flame of the forest,” produces an orange-red dye tied to Holi celebrations, while safflower provides red tones and serves as a saffron substitute. Nepal likewise uses marigolds and rhododendron blossoms for handwoven Himalayan wools.
East Asia has deep safflower roots. Japan’s beni-bana tradition produces the vivid red seen in kimonos and historic lip rouge, with Yamagata Prefecture as the historical center of cultivation. In China, safflower and gardenia fruits create yellow dyes for textiles and food, while chrysanthemum offers subtle yellow tones.
The Middle East and Central Asia relied heavily on safflower along Silk Road routes. Iran has used it for centuries in Persian carpets, and Turkey’s Anatolian weavers incorporated the same plant into traditional fabrics. Afghanistan and Uzbekistan also treated safflower as both a dye crop and a trade commodity.
Europe built much of its dye heritage on weld (Reseda luteola), a flowering plant that produces one of the strongest natural yellows known. France cultivated weld for tapestries and fabric, often alongside woad. England, Germany, and the Netherlands once depended on weld and dyer’s broom for yellow wool and linen dyes. Modern British dye gardens are reviving those plants through the slow-fashion movement, and Hungary still grows safflower for culinary and textile uses.
The Americas show both ancient and emerging practices. Mexico’s marigold, or cempasúchil, colors Day of the Dead altars and has long been used in Oaxacan weaving. Andean communities in Peru use native flowers for yellow and green tones alongside insect-based cochineal. In the United States, small natural dye farms in Vermont, Oregon, and North Carolina now supply artisanal makers with marigolds, coreopsis, and dyer’s chamomile. Guatemala’s Mayan weavers combine marigolds with indigo and cochineal.
Africa and Oceania add further range. West Africa, including Nigeria, uses hibiscus for earthy red tones in fabric and leather, though indigo dominates. Ethiopia has used safflower as food coloring and textile dye, while Morocco’s saffron crocus has a minor dye history. In Australia, contemporary artists draw yellow and rust colors from eucalyptus and wattle flowers, and New Zealand makers experiment with kowhai blossoms in Māori-influenced textiles.

Practical Notes for Dyers
Mordants matter as much as the flower. Alum, iron, and copper can shift the same blossom into dramatically different colors. Fresh and dried flowers also behave differently, and plants like safflower require special soaking and fermentation to release usable pigment. Many natural dyes are less colorfast than synthetics, so fixing techniques are essential.
The revival of flower dyes is more than nostalgia. It reflects a broader push toward sustainable textiles and local production. As designers and consumers seek alternatives to petroleum-based colors, ancient flowers are once again becoming a practical, renewable source of beauty.
