The common name stems from an old belief that the plant’s root could cure rabies.
Equally hardy is Rosa rugosa, the beach rose, originating in East Asia. Its wrinkled leaves and tolerance for sandy, salty soils have allowed it to naturalize along shorelines across North America and Europe. The large, tomato-like hips remain a staple for preserves and vitamin supplements.
One of the most historically significant species is Rosa gallica, the French rose, native to central and southern Europe and western Asia. The variety Rosa gallica officinalis, known as the Apothecary’s Rose, was cultivated for centuries in medicinal gardens and for rose oil production.

Perhaps no species revolutionized Western gardening more than Rosa chinensis, the China rose. When it arrived in Europe in the late 18th century, it brought the genetic key to repeat blooming, a trait previously absent from European roses. This breakthrough laid the foundation for tea roses and modern hybrid teas.
Rosa foetida, the Austrian briar, contributed pure yellow and orange-red hues that were unknown in European roses. Despite its unpleasant scent—hence its name—breeders valued its color genetics enough to pass down through generations.
North America contributed Rosa arkansana, the prairie rose, which thrives on the Great Plains and withstands extreme temperature swings, and Rosa virginiana, the Virginia rose, notable for its glossy foliage that turns vivid red and orange in autumn—rare among roses.

Wild roses serve as more than genetic building blocks. Rosa spinosissima, the Scotch rose, stabilizes coastal dunes with its suckering habit and distinctive dark purple-black hips. Rosa laevigata, the Cherokee rose, naturalized across the southeastern United States and became the official state flower of Georgia, entwined with Cherokee history and folklore.
Rosa banksiae, Lady Banks’ rose, produces nearly thornless, enormous climbing canes. One specimen in Tombstone, Arizona, covers thousands of square feet and holds the title of the world’s largest rose bush.
These species collectively form the foundation of thousands of rose cultivars grown today. Their contributions extend beyond beauty: they stabilize soil, feed birds and pollinators, and preserve genetic diversity critical for future breeding. As climate pressures mount, breeders are increasingly turning to these hardy ancestors for traits like disease resistance, cold tolerance and drought adaptability.
