Tears of a Botanist: Rare Rafflesia Rediscovery Sparks Race to Save Species

SUMPUR KUDUS, West Sumatra — On the night of November 19, 2025, a former elementary school gym teacher collapsed to his knees in the mud and wept.

Septian “Deki” Andriki had spent 13 years hunting for a single flower. His quarry: Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic, leafless bloom that can grow larger than a dinner plate and had not been confirmed alive in the wild for more than a decade. The breakthrough came from a local tip that led Andriki, along with Oxford Botanic Garden botanist Chris Thorogood and Indonesian researcher Joko Ridho Witono, on a nearly day-long trek through tiger-inhabited rainforest in West Sumatra’s Sijunjung Regency.

When the team finally located the bud unfurling its blood-red, white-speckled petals, Andriki could barely speak. “After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” he later recalled. “I just cried.”

Footage of the moment — a grown man sobbing before a flower — ricocheted across Indonesian, British, and American media within days. But the viral clip masked a serious scientific milestone.

A Rare Treasure, Nearly Lost

Rafflesia hasseltii is one of roughly 42 recognized species in the Rafflesia genus, a family of bizarre, chlorophyll-less parasites found only in rainforests of Sumatra, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Brunei. Lacking leaves, stems, and roots, rafflesias live invisibly inside host vines for years, emerging only for rare, brief blooms that can span nearly a meter across. They emit a rotting-meat odor to attract carrion flies for pollination.

That combination of rarity and biological strangeness makes rafflesias a holy grail for field botanists — and nearly impossible to protect. Researchers estimate roughly two-thirds of known hasseltii populations grow outside any legally protected forest, exposed to logging, land conversion, and disturbance with no formal safeguards.

The 2025 rediscovery, part of a multinational research effort backed by the University of Oxford and involving scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, served as both taxonomic triumph and conservation alarm. The team has been collecting DNA from more than a dozen rafflesia variants across Indonesia to map genetic relationships, hoping to explain why the plant blooms so rarely and unpredictably.

A Global Discovery Engine

The Sumatran find captured headlines, but it represents just one facet of a far larger enterprise: the ongoing, unglamorous work of discovering and naming new plant species—many for the first time, some possibly for the last.

At the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, scientists describe roughly 200 new species annually, accounting for about one in every ten new plant names worldwide. In 2025, the Garden highlighted ten standout discoveries, including:

  • A new moonlight cactus species (Selenicereus), confirmed after a two-decade wait for a cutting to flower in a retired curator’s Costa Rican yard
  • Mimusops sahakensis, an endangered sapodilla relative found on only two sand dune sites in Madagascar, both threatened by charcoal production
  • Diospyros schatzii, a new persimmon species named for a late Garden botanist

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History reported its botanists published nine new species, three new genera, and one new subgenus in 2025. Perhaps the most striking finding: researchers described Rojovitis, a new subgenus of Vitis — the genus that includes cultivated grapes — built around two newly identified, threatened wild grape species from Chiapas, Mexico, distinguished by red flowers and stems dotted with prominent pores. It marked only the third recognized grape subgenus in nearly a century.

Citizen Science and Drones Join the Hunt

Not every discovery required a jungle expedition. In Texas’s Big Bend National Park, volunteer botanist Deb Manley was hiking a remote desert stretch when she spotted small, fuzzy plants with maroon flowers between rocks — something she had never seen before. She uploaded photos to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist, triggering expert identification that led to the description of an entirely new genus nicknamed the “wooly devil” — the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.

In Hawaii, discovery took a technological leap. Researchers from the National Tropical Botanical Garden, the Smithsonian, and a robotics firm deployed a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to reach a cliff face on Kauai. The drone returned with samples of a previously unknown plant in the carnation family, since named Schiedea waiahuluensis — possibly the first new plant species ever discovered by drone. The mission also yielded an unidentified insect that researchers are still investigating.

A Race Against “Dark Extinction”

Together, these discoveries tell two stories. The first is one of persistence and luck: a rediscovered rafflesia, a two-decade cactus wait, a chance photograph, a robotic arm. The second is more sobering. Many plants botanists find for the first time are already among the rarest organisms on Earth — restricted to a single mountain range, stretch of sand dune, or cliff face — and already threatened by logging, land conversion, or habitat loss.

That urgency drives the work. As botanists at both the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Smithsonian argue, naming a species is the necessary first step before any legal protection, funding, or conservation plan can exist. A plant without a name is, practically, a plant without a defense. Only once Rafflesia hasseltii was confirmed alive could researchers begin advocating for stronger protections in forests where most populations remain outside protected boundaries.

Scientists estimate that thousands of plant species worldwide remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction before formal recognition — a phenomenon researchers call “dark extinction.” Each year’s tally of new species is not simply an inventory of nature’s surprises. It is a race against time, run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
